Thaana Phonetic Keyboard - ChromeOS
Thaana Phonetic Keyboard is a Chrome extension developed by Riyaz Mansoor. This free add-on allows users to input text in Thaana script, which is used to write the Dhivehi language from the Maldives.
ChromeOS does not natively support the Dhivehi language or provide a Thaana input keyboard. However, with this extension, users can now type in Thaana script using a new keyboard attached to the existing Hebrew language, which is also written from right to left.
To install the Thaana Phonetic Keyboard, simply add the extension to Chrome and make sure the Hebrew language is installed. Then, select the Thaana Phonetic Keyboard from the input methods. Once installed, users can easily switch between keyboards using the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Space.
It's important to note that the extension does not provide any Thaana script fonts. Instead, it relies on the built-in Unicode font available on ChromeOS to display Thaana characters. For aesthetically professional Thaana documents, users can convert their files to PDF in GSuite applications, as Google substitutes a font with more pleasing Thaana Unicode characters.
Additionally, the Thaana Phonetic Keyboard offers command keys for fast outputs. By using the back tick key (\`), users can access various commands such as displaying Allah and Bismillah in Arabic, getting the Hijri date, displaying the Gregorian date in Thaana script, and more.
The latest updates to the Thaana Phonetic Keyboard include code and documentation improvements in version 1.0.2, and a complete rebuild of the command key functionality to offer variable length commands in version 1.0.1.
